BROWNSVILLE, Texas – The Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation (GBIC) is proud to announce the continued partnership with CODEM (Matamoros Economic Development Committee). GBIC believes that the neighboring communities of Brownsville, Texas, and Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico, share the goal of enhancing economic development in the binational region.  In order to strengthen the relationship between communities, GBIC has established a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).  The MOU will provide a framework for collaboration by meeting quarterly, creating committees, discussing international crossing updates, and legislative agendas.

“For years, Brownsville and Matamoros have worked alongside to attract new businesses to the area, fostering the region’s economic development.  Through GBIC and CODEM, Brownsville and Matamoros will continue to work together in a more unified way by recruiting and retaining businesses in both cities.  This collaboration will facilitate the process of developing new leads and creating more jobs on both sides of the border,” said Commissioner John Cowen.

“Our GBIC and CODEM collaboration is key as we work towards accelerating our industrial growth corridors within the Brownsville/Matamoros region.  As sister cities, together we will continue to attract more businesses, tackle supply chain pain points, strengthen and support our young workforce, and promote the economic prosperity of Texas and Mexico” said Helen Ramirez, Executive Director GBIC.

“The development and execution of the MOU with the Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation is the formalization of what has long been an unspoken arrangement between Brownsville and Matamoros.  This MOU provides a framework for maximizing collaborative efforts between both organizations, focusing on creating binational economic development opportunities to ensure that the Brownsville – Matamoros region reaches its full potential.  We, at CODEM, are convinced that once we add Matamoros logistical advantages, a skilled and dynamic workforce to the equation; the sky is the limit for our region,” said Grecia Zertuche, CODEM’s Executive Director.

The Greater Brownsville Incentives Corporation seeks to promote economic growth in Brownsville and Cameron County by empowering a young and skilled workforce and driving innovation in the area.  It facilitates economic growth by promoting investment and working with regional and international partners with job creation, training, innovation, business development, and manufacturing.  GBIC is a non-profit organization, Type-A Economic Development Corporation.
