South Texas College has been working to increase digital capabilities for its students, and to support this effort, the college recently received a $2.8 million National Institute of Standards and Technology grant. 

This grant will allow the college to increase the internet service across all STC campuses, according to STC Vice President of Information Services, Planning, Performance and Strategic Initiatives David Plummer, Ed.D. 

“Here in the Valley, we’re making strides in closing the digital divide, and STC is a part of that. We’re leveraging what others are doing to also expand on our technical and digital infrastructure,” said Plummer. “Our goal is that our students will have the best quality infrastructure that supports their learning and academic goals. This grant is going to help us make this possible.”

The grant, under the Department of Commerce, National Telecommunications and Information Administration program as part of the Connecting Minority Communities Pilot Program was awarded to colleges and universities in 29 states and four territories, including STC.  

“Access to affordable, reliable, high-speed internet service is necessary for minority students and local communities to fully access school, health care and jobs,” said Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo. “The Department of Commerce has made significant investment into minority-serving colleges and universities, and I am proud to say that all funding from the Connecting Minority Communities program has been distributed to help make internet connectivity a reality for tens of thousands of students at minority-serving colleges and universities across the country.”

STC’s Educational Technologies, Information Technologies and Library and Learning Support Services Departments will use the award to upgrade fiber-optic bandwidth connectivity between the Mid-Valley, Starr County and the Technology campuses; upgrade the existing infrastructure and equipment to build capacity in the classrooms at these campuses by converting the technology from analog to digital;increase the adoption of broadband internet services by providing mobile hotspots and student services to at least 350 students and expand instruction and remote learning opportunities for students by virtualizing specialized desktop software.

Interim Chief Information Officer of Infrastructure and Software Development Lucio Gonzalez said receiving this grant is invaluable to the college and its students.

“The Information Technology department is extremely happy to receive this grant, as this will enhance the connectivity to campuses across counties and provide virtual computers and software to our students throughout the district,” said Gonzalez. “I want to thank everyone involved, especially the Resource and Development, Management and Compliance department for their guidance on this important grant.”

Dean of Library and Learning Support Services Jesus H. Campos, Ph.D. and Director of Educational Technologies Marie Evans, Ed.D. agree that receiving this grant was an exciting moment. 

“We are honored and grateful for this award,” said Campos. “We look forward to implementing technology and learning support improvements set out in our submission.”

Evans added, “The Educational Technologies team is excited for the opportunity to upgrade the technical infrastructure of our classroom facilities which will assist in providing engaging instructional interactions. This was a collaboration among many, and we are so grateful.” 

Plummer said with this grant, STC can develop and implement upgrades and new technology at a much faster pace.

“Through this grant, we found the right fit for what we are doing,” he said. “It’s been quite the process, but with collaboration and support from our leadership and Board of Trustees, we’re making these advancements happen for the success of our students. The goal is to break the digital barrier.”

The FBI has joined a push to recruit more female sworn law enforcement officers and to empower them professionally.

In its commitment to the 30×30 Initiative, the FBI and other participating law enforcement agencies have pledged to:

  • Increase representation of women in recruiting classes to at least 30% by 2030; 
  • Promote agency culture and standards that set up female officers for success; and 
  • Share progress, successes, and challenges with others in the 30×30 network. 

“The FBI is committed to ensuring our work environment supports the recruitment, development, and advancement of our female sworn officers,” said FBI Director Christopher Wray about the FBI’s decision to take the 30×30 Pledge. “This important commitment reflects our continued dedication to bringing more women into our special agent cadre, FBI police, and the FBI’s leadership ranks. We are honored to join more than 260 of our policing partners in making this commitment.” 

Law enforcement agencies from across the United States—and a handful from Canada—have also taken the pledge. Private sector and academic organizations are also taking part in the wider 30×30 effort. The National Association of Women Law Enforcement Executives and the New York University School of Law’s Policing Project are sponsoring the initiative. 

“The Department of Justice joined this effort in September 2022 to help fulfill the executive order on advancing effective, accountable policing and criminal justice practices to enhance public trust and public safety,” explained Kisha Winston, a supervisory special agent in the FBI’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion. “That directive called for strengthening federal law enforcement recruitment, hiring, promotions, and retention practices with a focus on promoting an inclusive, diverse, and expert law enforcement workforce.” She added that making law enforcement agencies better mirror the communities they serve will enhance public safety.

FBI Chief Diversity Officer Scott McMillion agreed, adding that the distinctive approach that female FBI agents and police officers bring will help the Bureau effectively fulfill its mission to the American people. 

More Than Words


Women currently make up 23.2% of our special agents—with percentages even higher for incoming new agent classes—and there are similar representation levels among FBI police.

For the FBI, the 30×30 Pledge isn’t just a promise to make its incoming special agent and police officer recruiting classes more female. It’s also an opportunity to examine how we can optimize our culture—including policies, procedures, and best practices—to support these officers. 

The Bureau plans to review processes and procedures to ensure equity and fairness across all operations, said Malaika Kennie, who serves as the FBI’s 30×30 program co-lead with ODI’s Dr. Kathleen Oltman. 

But since 30×30 is a multi-year effort for the FBI, the public should view it as a marathon—not a sprint.  

Recruiting the Future 


Research published by the 30×30 initiative indicates women only account for about 12% of sworn law enforcement officers in the country. Their research also shows that the percentage drops in the upper ranks, with women comprising just 3% of sworn officers at the police chief level.  

But those statistics may be more closely tied to societal norms than to FBI application hurdles, said Oltman, an industrial and organizational psychologist at the FBI. “When you think of stereotypes and the job roles typically done by law enforcement, they don’t tend to fit with most women’s self-image,” she said. “However, we want to change that narrative and help them see a pathway to success at the FBI.”  

McMillion said the Bureau’s participation in 30×30 will show Americans that there’s room for them in its workforce—regardless of their gender or other aspects of their identity. The effort will also help the Bureau intentionally seek out talent from all communities, he added. 

The Bureau hopes that its 30×30 pledge will encourage women to envision a future for themselves at the FBI. 

“I think representation matters, and when people see representation at all levels—to include women—that encourages them to consider the FBI as an employer of choice and a place to serve their community,” McMillion said.

HIDALGO, Texas— U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Field Operations (OFO) at the Hidalgo International Bridge arrested a woman in an alleged attempt to smuggle an undocumented minor through the Hidalgo International Bridge. They also arrested a second woman at the Anzalduas International Bridge in a separate alleged smuggling of an undocumented minor incident.

“Our CBP officers thwarted these alleged child smuggling attempts thanks to their experience and excellent interview skills,” said Port Director Carlos Rodriguez, Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas Port of Entry. “These apprehensions are testament to the notion that violation of immigration law will not be tolerated, carry tangible legal consequences and will be prosecuted to the highest extent allowed by federal law.”

On March 21, 2023, CBP officers assigned to the Hidalgo International Bridge encountered a 18-year-old female U.S. citizen presenting a U.S. birth certificate for a one-year-old minor traveling with her.  During the examination, CBP officers discovered that the minor was not related to her, and the birth certificate, while legitimate, did not belong to the minor. The minor was not a U.S. citizen, and he did not possess valid entry documents.

On March 22, 2023, CBP officers assigned to the Anzalduas International Bridge encountered a 19-year-old female U.S. citizen vehicle driver who presented a U.S. birth certificate for a female passenger. During the examination, CBP officers discovered that female was in fact 16-years-old, and the birth certificate, while legitimate, did not belong to her. The minor was not a U.S. citizen, and she did not possess valid entry documents.

CBP OFO arrested the women for alleged violation of U.S. immigration law.

EDINBURG, Texas – Rio Grande Valley (RGV) Sector Border Patrol agents interdicted five narcotic smuggling events in two days, resulting in two arrests and the seizure of over $1,000,000 in drugs.

On March 21, Rio Grande City (RGC) agents seized over 134 pounds of marijuana after they observed subjects carrying bundles near the Rio Grande in Escobares. As RGC agents responded to the area the subjects dropped the narcotics and fled toward the river towards Mexico. Agents seized three bundles valued at more than $107,000. Simultaneously in Brownsville, Fort Brown agents seized over 143 pounds of marijuana after a camera operator observed subjects carrying bundles near the Rio Grande. After a thorough search of the area, agents seized two bundles and apprehended one subject. The marijuana is valued at more than $115,000.

On March 22, Harlingen agents responded to suspicious activity near the river in Rancho Grande, Texas. Agents interdicted one possible narcotic smuggler in the brush after a camera image showed a subject headed back towards the river. After a search of the immediate area, agents seized two bundles of marijuana with a total weight of over 50 pounds.

Additionally, within a 24-hour time frame, RGV agents seized more than 664 pounds of marijuana and over 10 pounds of methamphetamine in separate events.

“Outstanding work by our Rio Grande Valley Sector agents in disrupting these narcotic smuggling attempts and keeping dangerous drugs out of our communities. Since October 1st to date, our Border Patrol agents have seized more than 10,000 pounds of marijuana,” said Chief Patrol Agent Gloria I. Chavez. “So extremely proud of their work!”

The founder of BreachForums made his initial appearance today in the Eastern District of Virginia on a criminal charge related to his alleged creation and administration of a major hacking forum and marketplace for cybercriminals that claimed to have more than 340,000 members as of last week. In parallel with his arrest on March 15, the FBI and Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (HHS-OIG) have conducted a disruption operation that caused BreachForums to go offline.

According to court documents unsealed today, Conor Brian Fitzpatrick, 20, of Peekskill, New York, allegedly operated BreachForums as a marketplace for cybercriminals to buy, sell, and trade hacked or stolen data and other contraband since March 2022. Among the stolen items commonly sold on the platform were bank account information, social security numbers, other personally identifying information (PII), means of identification, hacking tools, breached databases, services for gaining unauthorized access to victim systems, and account login information for compromised online accounts with service providers and merchants. 

“Today, we continue our work to dismantle key players in the cybercrime ecosystem,” said Deputy Attorney General Lisa O. Monaco. “Like its predecessor RaidForums, which we took down almost a year ago, BreachForums bridged the gap between hackers hawking pilfered data and buys eager to exploit it. All those operating in dark net markets should take note: Working with our law enforcement partners, we will take down illicit forums and bring administrators to justice in U.S. courtrooms.”

“People expect that their online data will be protected, and the Department of Justice is committed to doing just that,” said Assistant Attorney General Kenneth A. Polite, Jr. of the Criminal Division. “We must and will remain vigilant to the threat posed by those who attempt to undermine our digital security. We will continue to disrupt the forums that facilitate the theft and distribution of personal information and prosecute those responsible.”

Fitzpatrick’s alleged victims have included millions of U.S. citizens and hundreds of U.S. and foreign companies, organizations, and government agencies. Some of the stolen datasets contained the sensitive information of customers at telecommunication, social media, investment, health care services, and internet service providers. For instance, on Jan. 4, a BreachForums user posted the names and contact information for approximately 200 million users of a major U.S.-based social networking site. Further, on Dec. 18, 2022, another BreachForums user posted details of approximately 87,760 members of InfraGard, a partnership between the FBI and private sector companies focused on the protection of critical infrastructure.

“Cybercrime victimizes and steals financial and personal information from millions of innocent people,” said U.S. Attorney Jessica D. Aber for the Eastern District of Virginia. “This arrest sends a direct message to cybercriminals: your exploitative and illegal conduct will be discovered, and you will be brought to justice.”

“The FBI will continue to devote all available resources to deter, disrupt, and diminish criminal enterprise activity,” said FBI Deputy Director Paul Abbate. “We will work alongside our federal and international partners to impose costs on malicious cyber actors around the world and continue to bring justice to those who victimize the American public.”

“Following the seizure of RaidForums last year, cybercriminals turned to BreachForums to buy and sell stolen data, including breached databases, hacking tools, and the personal and financial information of millions of U.S. citizens and businesses,” said Assistant Director in Charge David Sundberg of the FBI Washington Field Office. “The FBI and our partners will not let cybercriminals and those who enable them profit from the theft of sensitive data while hiding behind keyboards. This arrest and disruption of yet another criminal marketplace demonstrates the potency of our joint work to dismantle the digital structures that facilitate cybercrime.”

As part of the scheme, Fitzpatrick allegedly supported the activities of cybercriminals by creating and operating a “Leaks Market” subsection that was dedicated to buying and selling hacked or stolen data, tools for committing cybercrime, and other illicit material. To facilitate transactions on the forum, Fitzpatrick allegedly offered to act as a trusted middleman, or escrow service, between individuals on the website who sought to conduct these types of illicit transactions. In addition, Fitzpatrick allegedly managed an “Official” databases section through which BreachForums directly sold access to verified hacked databases through a “credits” system administered by the platform. As of Jan. 11, the Official database section purported to contain 888 datasets, consisting of over 14 billion individual records. These databases belong to a wide variety of both U.S. and foreign companies, organizations, and government agencies. Fitzpatrick allegedly profited from the scheme by charging for forum credits and membership fees.

“This case sends a clear message that illicitly stealing, selling, and trading the personal information of innocent members of the public will not be tolerated, and that malicious cyber actors will be held accountable,” said Special Agent in Charge Stephen Niemczak of the HHS-OIG. “HHS-OIG and our law enforcement partners remain dedicated to protecting the American public and the integrity of government networks and data from these egregious cyberattacks.”

The BreachForums website has supported additional sections in which users discuss tools and techniques for hacking and exploiting hacked or stolen information, including in the “Cracking,” “Leaks,” and “Tutorials” sections. The BreachForums website also includes a “Staff” section that appears to be operated by the BreachForums administrators and moderators.

Fitzpatrick is charged with conspiracy to commit access device fraud. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison.

Fitzpatrick’s arrest and the disruption of BreachForums comes nearly a year after the Department of Justice announced the seizure of a predecessor hacking marketplace, Raidforums, and unsealed criminal charges against RaidForums’ founder and chief administrator, who is the subject of extradition proceedings in the United Kingdom.

The law enforcement actions against Fitzpatrick and BreachForums are the result of an ongoing criminal investigation by the FBI Washington Field Office, FBI San Francisco Division, and HHS-OIG, with assistance provided by the U.S. Secret Service, Homeland Security Investigations New York Field Office, New York Police Department, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and Peekskill Police Department. The U.S. Attorneys’ Office for the Northern District of California, the District of Maryland, and the Southern District of New York have also provided assistance in this matter.

The Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs is handling the extradition.

The Criminal Division’s Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section (CCIPS) and Assistant U.S. Attorney Carina A. Cuellar for the Eastern District of Virginia are prosecuting the case.

A criminal complaint is merely an allegation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

McALLEN, Texas — McAllen native and experienced educator Lizzie Kittleman officially launched her campaign for McAllen Independent School District (MISD) School Board Trustee Place 1 March 9. She is committed to ensuring academic success for all McAllen ISD students and better support for teachers and staff. With her classroom experience, Kittleman seeks to bring a fresh perspective to the MISD School Board.

Lizzie Kittleman is focused on these key priorities:

1.     Supporting the Whole Child: Prioritizing students well-being by investing in enrichment programs, support services, and curriculum that promotes long-term development and welcomes school communities.

2.     Ensuring a Safe, Quality Education: Advocating for resources and policies that empower the MISD workforce and implementing evidence-based practices to ensure safe learning environments.

3.     Transparency and Accountability: Upholding transparency and engaging community members and staff in the decision-making process.

Kittleman has a proven track record in education that has already earned her the local endorsement of the McAllen American Federation of Teachers (McAllen AFT). Her experience as a student and as a graduate of McAllen ISD and her passion for education were fostered by the very district she hopes to serve. Kittleman earned a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and a master’s in education (M.Ed.) focused on curriculum and instruction. She earned both degrees from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. While Kittleman is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Education (Ed.D.) at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, she has over nine years of experience as an educator. She was voted Teacher of the Year in 2019 while working at a Title I campus. Kittleman is a graduate of Leadership McAllen Class 41 and currently serves as a board member for the Boys and Girls Club of McAllen.

Earlier this month Kittleman’s campaign kickoff event was held on the 17th Floor of Chase Tower in Downtown McAllen. Kittleman laid out the foundation of her campaign in a room full of supporters, as well as dignitaries including:

Thank you for allowing me to quickly introduce myself! I was born and raised in McAllen. I am one of five daughters of Abdala (Lalo) and Alma Kalifa. My husband, Marcos Lopez, and I and our three children (two current McAllen ISD students and one graduate) live in OldeTowne, McAllen. I graduated from McAllen Memorial HS, received my bachelor’s degree in business HR at Texas A&M University in College Station and my master’s in business administration from the University of Texas-Pan American. I served on the McAllen ISD Board of Trustees from 2011-2015. I have continued to serve my community through the following organizations:

I am running for school board to help advocate for responsible budgeting and funding that supports student success and teacher/auxiliary/staff retention. My priority is to safeguard every tax dollar and make sure it is invested wisely. This ensures accountability and enhances transparency.

Our district is facing major challenges: annual loss of student enrollment, high employee turnover, and a budget deficit in the millions that is currently covered only by one-time ESSER funds that expire in 2024.

It is imperative that we ensure all children have access to a quality education. As the daughter of a small business owner, I share the pride and commitment of continuing our city’s legacy. As a small business owner now myself, as well as a taxpayer and life-long resident of McAllen, I am aware that quality public education is an economic tool that allows strong neighborhoods to thrive, builds cohesive communities, and allows our city to compete globally when attracting and retaining new businesses and families. Great schools are critical for a prosperous community and a sustainable economy.  

McAllen ISD is the largest employer in the City of McAllen. It is vital that we foster community engagement, which is only possible when our board of trustees welcomes honest and open feedback and involvement from our families and employees. I am grateful for your engagement in this most vital of decisions for the future of our city–voting in the McAllen ISD School Board Election.

AUSTIN, Texas – Governor Greg Abbott championed Texas’ support for U.S. Border Patrol agents in their efforts to secure the border during the keynote address at the National Border Patrol Council (NBPC) Dinner in Houston. Addressing more than 220 agents and their families, the Governor thanked agents for their work to keep America safe and promised that Texas will always have their backs—even when the Biden Administration does not.

During the keynote address, the Governor discussed how Texas’ Operation Lone Star mission is helping U.S. Border Patrol agents combat the historic influx of illegal immigrants, deadly drugs like fentanyl, and dangerous weapons into the United States as a result of President Biden’s open border policies. Joined by NBPC President Brandon Judd and NBPC Executive Vice President Paul Perez, Governor Abbott also outlined how Texas has done more than any other state in the history of our nation to secure the border. The Governor also presented a proclamation to NBPC President Judd, naming him an honorary Texan in recognition of his service to the hardworking men and women of Border Patrol in Texas and the United States.

Founded in 1967, the NBPC is the exclusive representative of approximately 18,000 Border Patrol agents and support personnel assigned to the U.S. Border Patrol. The U.S. Border Patrol falls under the Department of Homeland Security. 

Addressing more than 220 agents and their families, the Governor thanked agents for their work to keep America safe and promised that Texas will always have their backs—even when the Biden Administration does not.

AUSTIN, Texas — On Wednesday, the Texas Senate unanimously passed a package of property tax bills that will provide tax relief to homeowners and businesses. Senate Bill 3 by Senator Paul Bettencourt and joint-authored by Senator Hinojosa would increase the Homestead Exemption from $40,000 to $70,000. Senate Bill 4 by Senator Bettencourt and co-authored by Senator Hinojosa would lower the tax rate school districts can levy by about 7 cents. Senate Bill 5 by Senator Tan Parker and joint-authored by Senator Hinojosa would increase the Business Personal Property Tax exemption from $2,500 to $25,000. These three bills would take effect if Senate Joint Resolution (SJR) 3 passes this session and the voters approve these provisions in a constitutional amendment in the November 2023 General Election.

State Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa, who joint-authored or co-authored all of these bills issued the following statement:

“Property tax reform continues to be a top priority for Lt. Governor Dan Patrick and all the members of the Texas Senate. The property tax relief bills I joint authored and we passed out of the Senate this week total $16.5 billion. Rising property taxes are something we all feel on an annual basis. For the past three sessions we have focused on reducing property taxes to help our families burdened with paying these taxes that sometimes feels like a second mortgage. With the passage of SB 3/SJR 3, SB 4, and SB 5, we are providing meaningful property tax relief to all Texans.

“SB 3 will increase the Homestead Exemption from $40,000 to $70,000 which will in turn lower the amount of our home’s value subject to school taxes. Homeowners ages 65 and older and the disabled would see their additional exemptions jump from $10,000 to $30,000, resulting in a total Homestead Exemption of $100,000.

“This will be the third time in less than ten years that we have increased the Homestead Exemption. In 2015, the exemption was set at $15,000 and the voters approved the increase to $25,000. In 2022, the voters approved increasing it to $40,000. It is estimated that this increase would save taxpayers an additional $341 on top of the average savings of $454 from the 2021 exemption. SB 4 will provide an additional $5.38 billion in school district tax rate compression and will reduce recapture for a number of school districts.

“I was also proud to joint author SB 5 to increase the Business Personal Property tax exemption from $2,500 to $25,000 to provide tax relief to our businesses. This bill also creates new inventory tax credits to further support our businesses and keep our Texas economy strong.

“I look forward to continue working with the members of the Legislature to get these bills to Governor Abbott’s desk and have Texans vote this November to provide this much needed property tax relief.

AUSTIN, Texas – Governor Greg Abbott, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), and the Texas National Guard are continuing to work together to secure the border; stop the smuggling of drugs, weapons, and people into Texas; and prevent, detect, and interdict transnational criminal behavior between ports of entry.
 
Since the launch of Operation Lone Star, the multi-agency effort has led to over 359,000 illegal immigrant apprehensions and more than 26,000 criminal arrests, with more than 23,000 felony charges reported. In the fight against fentanyl, DPS has seized over 373 million lethal doses of fentanyl during this border mission.
 
Operation Lone Star continues to fill the dangerous gaps left by the Biden Administration’s refusal to secure the border. Every individual who is apprehended or arrested and every ounce of drugs seized would have otherwise made their way into communities across Texas and the nation due to President Biden’s open border policies.

WATCH: DPS Discusses Record Influx Of Chinese Nationals Illegally Entering
 
NewsNation correspondent Jorge Ventura reported from Hidalgo this week on the recent spike in illegal border crossings attempted by Chinese nationals. In the first five months of fiscal year 2023, there have been more than 4,300 encounters with Chinese nationals at the southwest border, with over 1,300 reported last month alone. Cartels are profiting off the influx by charging Chinese individuals $35,000 to $50,000 a person to be smuggled into the country and leading to a 900% increase in Chinese national apprehensions at the southern border since last year.
 
“DPS is dealing with an uptick in Chinese nationals, especially in the Rio Grande Valley sector, which is unusual because before we would never see this many Chinese nationals coming across this area ,” said DPS Lt. Chris Olivarez. “It’s a very lucrative business for cartels.”

DPS Lt. Olivarez spoke with Fox News this week about the many dangers resulting from President Biden’s ongoing border crisis, including Mexican drug cartels that are more powerful than ever before and deadly fentanyl pouring across the southern border. Texas is working to combat the out-of-control fentanyl crisis, with efforts that include Senate Bill 645 in the current legislative session that would allow prosecutors to charge fentanyl distributors with murder if someone dies from a fentanyl poisoning. 
 
“We know for a fact that fentanyl is coming across the border, as well as other illicit drugs, and of course the Mexican drug cartels are behind this crisis,” said Lt. Olivarez. “Even though we’ve made significant seizures at the ports of entry, that tells us that the cartels are producing more fentanyl than ever before. Last year, Governor Abbott designated the cartels as terrorist organizations, but we need a federal response to go after these organizations to dismantle the labs in Mexico and stop the flow of chemical precursors that are being imported from China.”

WATCH: Texas National Guard Reaches Over 30,000 Turn Backs
 
Operation Lone Star has surpassed 30,000 illegal immigrants deterred and turned back to Mexico. Recently, a group of 20 illegal immigrants returned to Mexico’s riverbank after facing law enforcement officers, Texas National Guardsmen, and other layers of physical barriers. Guardsmen work side-by-side with their law enforcement partners to deter illegal entry into the U.S. using radios and roving and static patrols.

WATCH: Human Smuggler Leads DPS On High-Speed Vehicle Pursuit
 
A human smuggler led DPS troopers on a high-speed pursuit in Kinney County. The driver from Dallas let five illegal immigrants bail out of the vehicle and continued to evade the troopers. He eventually bailed out into the brush before being apprehended.
 
The driver was charged with evading arrest and smuggling of persons. All five illegal immigrants were referred to Border Patrol.

A DPS Trooper discovered three illegal immigrants from Mexico during a traffic stop in Val Verde County. The trooper stopped a truck carrying bales of hay on US-277 and during the investigation discovered the illegal immigrants were inside a hidden compartment underneath the bales. The driver from Florida was smuggling the illegal immigrants to Houston and is now charged with smuggling of persons.
