South Texas College student Javier Flores Jr., takes pride in serving his college community as a work study and Student Ambassador with STC College Connections, and for his dedication to academic excellence and the community, he recently earned the title of Work Study of the Year 2024.
“I’m not one to boast, but this is an honor and there is truly no better feeling than the joy of helping others, that is the true reward, it is the most fulfilling part of my job,” he said. “This is just validation that I am doing the right thing, this opportunity wouldn’t have been possible without my parents believing in me and pushing me to put myself out there and the endless support of the College Connections team.”
Flores started his position at College Connections as a work study in September 2022, igniting a new role he immediately grew passionate about.
“I find joy in all of my tasks whether it’s taking calls or doing tours, I love seeing the students, families and all of our visitors having an amazing experience here at the college,” Flores expressed. “I was once a student who needed extra guidance and the way each department from financial aid and advising to college connections has taken their time to guide me in reaching my goals, is the same impact I want to make on our visitors and students.”
Flores emphasized how his role has not only allowed him to make connections with his community and excel academically, but he has also learned invaluable skills along the way.
“Along with serving my community, my department and the position I get to do, I have learned so many valuable lessons and skills like public speaking and networking, but I have also grown to be more confident as a student and professional,” he shared. “For other students who may be interested in a work study position, it is something that I cannot recommend enough. The balance between study and work is geared towards student success and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.”
Coordinator of College Connections Cristobal Benavides, attests Javier’s ability to connect with others while simultaneously embodying the spirit of STC.
“One of Javier’s most commendable qualities is his innate ability to connect with individuals from different backgrounds,” Benavides shared. “His exceptional people skills create an inclusive environment where everyone feels seen, heard and supported. As a student ambassador, Javier represents our college with integrity and enthusiasm, embodying the spirit of community and academic excellence.”
Flores learned about the work study opportunities offered at STC when he began taking courses in 2022.
“When I started my academic journey, like many students I didn’t know where to start,” Flores said. “After talking to my parents, they recommended I start at South Texas College and after my first time visiting the campus and speaking with the staff, I felt like I was at the right place. Being a work study was an opportunity I could not pass up, it’s been a great experience.”
