Abilene – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s soccer team fell 3-2 in overtime to the Abilene Christian University (ACU) Wildcats on Sunday at Elmer Gray Stadium.
With the match tied at two, the Wildcats (3-4-1, 1-0-1 WAC) got the game-winning goal from Emily Heidman, who took the cross from Alyssia Anuat and headed into the golden goal.
The Wildcats got the scoring started back in the 40th minute as Chayse Thorn suck it past Vaquero’s goalie Maile Lunardi for the 1-0 lead.
The Vaqueros (5-6-1, 1-1-0 WAC) put the pressure on the Wildcats towards the end of the first half when freshman Sydney Hammond found redshirt sophomore Elina Seppälä at the top of the box finding the back of the net tying the match at 1-1 in the 44th minute.
The Vaqueros came out of the locker room in the second half and didn’t waste much time to take the 2-1 lead when sophomore Anna Torslov got it past Wildcat’s goalie Lily Foster in the 47th minute for her second goal of the season.
ACU’s Taylor Denn got the match-tying goal in the 77th minute as her shot went off Lunardi’s hands and into the net for the goal.
Lunardi (3-5-1) finished the match with six saves while Foster made eight saves.
The Wildcats outshot the Vaqueros 22 to 20 while the Vaqueros outshot the Wildcats 10 to nine on goal.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Thursday when they host Sam Houston at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex at 7 p.m. Those unable to attend the match can watch in the United States on ESPN+ or internationally on the WAC Digital Network.
