RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women’s soccer closed out the 2021 season with a 2-1 overtime loss to the Chicago State University Cougars on Saturday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
The match was scoreless until the 85th minute when Jayla Gage scored from the left side to put the Cougars (2-14-1, 2-8-0 WAC) up 1-0.
The Vaqueros (6-12-2, 2-7-1 WAC) responded less than two minutes later when junior Shentatious Knoxsent a pass from the right toward the top of the box. The ball appeared to be headed toward UTRGV’s all-time leading goal scorer and point-getter junior Emily Zapata, who let the ball go by. Sophomore Cami Dadewas right next to Zapata and fired a screamer into the back of the net to tie the match at 1. It was Dade’s first-career goal and her first points as a Vaquero after previously recording an assist with Kentucky in 2019.
In the 98th minute, however, Gage scored the game-winner off an assist from Julia Oliveira.
The Vaqueros outshot the Cougars 15-7, including 8-3 on goal.
Graduate student Maile Lunardi (4-11-1) made one save.
Alexa Seiler (2-12-1) made seven saves.
Before the match Anna Barkey, Knox, Lunardi, Victoria Mayo, McAllen alum Miranda Munoz, Pace alum Kryssie Rivera, Shi’Anne Swift, and Zapata were honored as part of the senior day ceremonies.
