CHICAGO, Illinois – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s soccer team defeated the Chicago State University Cougars 1-0 in their Western Athletic Conference (WAC) opener on Friday at SeatGeek Stadium.
The Vaqueros (5-5-1, 1-0-0 WAC) put the pressure on the Cougars (0-7-1, 0-0-0 WAC) throughout the first half with 12 shots but finally broke through in the 30th minute.
Junior Shentatious Knox took the pass from junior Emily Zapata and found herself one-on-one with Cougar’s goalie Alexa Seiler. Knox flicked it over Seiler and into the goal making it 1-0 on her third goal of the season.
That would be all the scoring in the match as Seiler finished the match with seven saves.
Graduate student Maile Lunardi (3-4-1) made four saves in the match to post her third shutout of the season and the 10th of her career.
The Vaqueros outshot the Cougars 18 to 11 and eight to four on goal.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Sunday when they travel to face the Abilene Christian University Wildcats at 1 p.m. at Elmer Gray Stadium.
