Women’s Golf Improves By 18 Strokes

KYLE – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s golf team improved by 18 strokes in the final round of the Texas State Invitational on Tuesday at Plum Creek Golf Course.  

After posting a second round 326, the Vaqueros bounced back to post a 308 in the final round to finish with a three-round score of 963. The Vaqueros finished in 12^th place just two shots back of Lamar for 11^th place. 

Sophomore Mercedes Vega led the Vaqueros with a three-round score of 235 to finish tied for 39^th. Vega improved by four strokes from her second-round score as she posted a final round 75.

Junior and Brownsville Veterans alum Julie Lucio and graduate student Rachel Yu both finished tied for 50^th with a three-round score of 240. Yu posted the team’s best round of the tournament with an even par 72 as she improved by 15 strokes from here second round while Lucio shaved two strokes off her second round with a final round 77. 

Freshman and Edinburg High alum Madi Ozuna and sophomore Samantha Garza finished tied for 62^nd with a three-round score of 251. Ozuna and Garza both carded a final round 84. 

BYU held on to win the team title with a three-round score of 882 after posting a final round 290. BYU’s Annick Haczkiewicz surged with a final round 68 to win the individual title with a three-round score of 211. 

The Vaqueros will be back in action from Feb. 21-22 at the Islander Classic, as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union.
