Women’s Golf Finishes In Fifth At WAC Championships

RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s golf team finished in fifth place at the Western Athletic Conference Championships on Wednesday at Riverhill Country Club. 

The Vaqueros, who were picked to finish sixth in the WAC Coaches Poll, posted a final round 311 to finish with a three-round score of 938. UTRGV finished ahead of Lamar, Utah Valley, Stephen F. Austin, and Chicago State. 

Junior and Brownsville Veterans alum Julie Lucio led the way for the Vaqueros as she finished in 15th with a three-round score of 229 after turning in a final round 78.

Sophomore Sophia Tejeda finished tied for 26th with a three-round score of 235 as she posted a final round 76. Freshman Maria Jose Ramirez finished in 36th with a three-round score of 239 after posting a final round 80. 

Sophomore Mercedes Vega finished one shot back of Ramirez with a three-round score of 240 after a final round 77 as she finished tied for 37th and sophomore Samantha Garza finished in 40th with a three-round score of 242 after a final round 82. 

New Mexico State held on to win the WAC Championship with a three-round score of 898 after carding a final round 301. Grand Canyon’s Siripatsorn Patchana posted her third straight one-under par 71 to win the individual championship with a three-round score of 213.
