RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s basketball head coach Lane Lord announced on Friday the addition of guard/forward Mariam Traore for the 2022-23 academic year.
Traore joins the program after spending two seasons at Clarendon College under Head Coach Mark James. Traore helped her team to the NJCAA Regional Championship game this past season while earning WJCAC All-Conference honors.
This past season, Traore played in 32 games and averaged 9.4 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game. Traore shot 45.1% from the floor while shooting 38.6% from three-point range.
“Mariam is a 6’0 guard/forward that can play multiple positions,” Lord said. “We are extremely excited to have Mariam’s versatility. She can really shoot the three, penetrate, and score the basketball. Mariam is a two-time All-WJCAC performer, and her basketball experience will be a welcomed addition to our program.”
As a freshman, Traore played in 23 games while averaging 11.0 points 7.7 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game on her way to WJCAC All-Conference honors. Traore remained consistent by shooting 43% from the floor and 37.8 percent from three-point range.
Traore, originally from Mali, is the daughter of Salifou and Santa. Traore joins Mele Kailahi, Tierra Trotter, Zariah Sango, Charlotte O’Keefe, and Ashton McCorry as part of this year’s signing class.
