LAWRENCE, KAN. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s basketball team fell to the Kansas Jayhawks 75-44 on Wednesday at Allen Fieldhouse.
Sophomore Maria Llorente led the Vaqueros (1-5) with 10 points and two steals. Sophomore Jena’ Williams scored eight points.
Taiyanna Jackson led the Jayhawks (6-1) with 13 points and four rebounds. Holly Kersgieter scored 10 points with four rebounds. Julie Brosseau finished with 10 points as well.
The Jayhawks led for most of the first few minutes, going up 8-5. That’s when sophomore Sara Bershers nailed a three and junior Jessica Martino sunk a layup to put the Vaqueros up 10-8. Then, with the game tied at 10, Williams drilled a three to put the Vaqueros up 13-10.
The Jayhawks scored the final four points of the first quarter and the first 14 of the second quarter to go up 28-13.
Llorente answered with a three-point play and a layup to bring the Vaqueros to within 10, but the Jayhawks scored the next nine points to push the game out of reach.
UTRGV is back in action on Monday at 6 p.m. against Houston Baptist at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at UTRGVTickets.com. The party starts in the Vaquero Village at 5:30 p.m. Those unable to attend the game in person can watch in the United States on ESPN+ or internationally on the WAC Digital Network.
