RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women’s basketball head coach Lane Lord announced on Friday the addition of Ashton McCorry for the 2022-23 academic year.
McCorry is currently in her first season with Garden City Community College where she has played three games while averaging 9.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game.
“Ashton is a great signing for UTRGV women’s basketball,” Lord said. “I recruited Ashton four years ago while at Pittsburg State and haven’t had the chance to coach her yet. We are excited to get her down to the Rio Grande Valley as a graduate transfer with two years of eligibility left. Ashton can play the 1-4 positions and with her length at 6’1, she will be a welcomed addition to our guard/forward positions.”
Prior to joining Garden City Community College, McCorry played three seasons at Pittsburg State where she played in 19 games in 2020-21 while playing in all 28 games in 2019-21 after redshirting her freshman season.
“Ashton comes from a great coaching foundation in high school at Bishop Carroll and Head Coach Taylor Steven and longtime mentor Don Racine,” Lord said. “Ashton currently plays for Antwain Scales, a former player of mine at Wichita Heights High School, at Garden City Community College. Ashton will be a great addition to our culture and the Rio Grande Valley.”
McCorry, originally from Wichita, Kansas, attended Bishop Carroll High School where she lettered four years in basketball, volleyball, and soccer. McCorry earned All-State Honorable Mention in basketball as a sophomore and senior, earned All-State First Team and Goalie of the Year honors in soccer as a junior and senior, and earned All-State Honorable Mention in volleyball as a freshman.
Ashton joins Zariah Sango and Charlotte O’Keefe as part of this year’s signing class.
