Mission, Texas – In an evening brimming with elegance, inspiration, and empowerment, the Rio Grande Valley Hispanic Chamber of Commerce hosted its highly anticipated “Hats Off to Women of Distinction” Dinner & Expo on March 19, 2025. The annual celebration, set against a backdrop of unity and pride, brought together leaders, families, and advocates from across the region to recognize the extraordinary achievements of Latina women who have made significant contributions in their fields and communities.

From humble beginnings to boardrooms, courtrooms, classrooms, and scientific labs, each honoree embodied the evening’s theme: lifting others while rising. The event highlighted accomplishments and journeys—many marked by sacrifice, resilience, and an unshakable belief in purpose.

The evening commenced at 6:00 p.m. with a cocktail hour, allowing guests to network, shop from local vendors, and connect with community leaders. At 7:00 p.m., Dr. Esmeralda Adame, Mistress of Ceremonies, welcomed attendees with a powerful message on the importance of reflection and feedback. She emphasized, “Recognition is not just about awards; it’s a reflection of the journey—filled with strength, courage, and hope.” Adelita Muñoz followed with a heartfelt invocation, setting a reverent and hopeful tone for the evening.

Guests were treated to a stunning violin performance by Israel Lince during dinner and entertainment at 7:15 p.m., setting the stage for the centerpiece of the evening: the Awards Ceremony.

The awards segment began at 7:45 p.m., recognizing phenomenal women shaping the future across ten categories.

Community & Social Leadership was awarded to Maru De La Paz, a fierce advocate for women and founder of Women to Women Magazine, who has uplifted countless voices and is working to launch a foundation providing scholarships for women in media.

Maria “Lupita” Guerra received the Diversity & Inclusion Award for 27 years of leadership at Walmart. Rising through the ranks, she became a symbol of mentorship and inclusion, impacting over 3,500 associates and countless future leaders.

Dr. Annabelle Palomo was honored for Educational Innovation. As founder of Rio Grande Valley College, she turned a small CNA program into a premier institution offering multiple healthcare programs, combating the national nursing shortage with local solutions.

Naomi Perales, a community relations leader and chairwoman of the RGV Partnership, won the Environmental & Agriculture award. Her work blends environmental education, faith, and community-building.

Justice & Legal Advocacy was awarded to Leah Wise and Mayor Norma Sepulveda. Wise, a nationally recognized injury attorney, has built a legacy of winning justice for clients and supporting women through philanthropy and mentorship.

Mayor Sepulveda, a first-generation college graduate and immigration attorney, uses her platform to fight for vulnerable communities and empower women to recognize their value and voice.

Dr. Teresa Patricia Feria Arroyo received the STEM & Digital Innovation Award. A biology professor and researcher, she leads initiatives focused on agricultural science and climate resilience. Recently honored at the White House, she shared her passion for education and perseverance.

Across the stage, a common thread emerged: the power of faith, mentorship, and community. Honorees offered guidance for the next generation. “Never compare your journey to others. There’s someone out there who needs your story to find their strength,” said Maru de la Paz. “Create inclusive spaces where all voices are valued,” urged Maria Guerra. “Dreams are only dreams unless you work at them daily,” added Dr. Palomo. “Be proud of your roots—they are the foundation for your wings,” said Vicencio.

Following the awards, the much-anticipated Derby Hat Contest at 8:45 p.m. added a fun and fashionable flair to the evening. The contest announced raffle winners and commended the honorees for their strength and legacy.

This year’s Women of Distinction gala wasn’t just a celebration of success—it was a call to action. Each story told was a blueprint for possibility, a reminder that representation matters and that behind every strong woman is a story of courage, sacrifice, and community. As Dr. Esmeralda Adame declared, “When one woman wins, we all win.”
