“As determined by the CDC, physical therapy is an essential service, we’ve been hit very hard by this virus,” said Marsha Terry, a registered nurse and the administrator for Terry Physical Therapy;

She told Texas Border Business that this pandemic impacted their lives in many ways. “Our children are at home, doing the best they can to continue school. We’re doing our best to minimize going to the grocery stores to decrease our exposure to other people.”

According to her, the general attitude about this pandemic in her neighborhood is quite noticeable. “People need to pay attention to where they are getting their information. There is a lot of information out there that is not coming from reliable sources,” she said.

She indicated that the general attitude about the reaction from the community was the panic buys out of control. Also, she said, “It’s been hard to find basic items. As a business, we need certain cleaning supplies to maintain our regular operation.”

What about the actions that the government is taking to handle the pandemic? “The government has never seen anything like this before. I know that they plan for disasters, but I feel like some of their responses have been reactionary to what the public is doing.”

What would you do different if you were the leader of this community? “Limiting the number of products/goods a person can buy should have been implemented a long time ago.”

How long can you sustain your business in the current environment? “Summer is already our slow season. We’ve already had to reduce staff, decreased hours, and we haven’t hit the summer yet.”

She continued, “Access to physical therapy would be easier if patients didn’t have to still consult a primary care physician for a referral. It’s archaic for patients to have still to do this.” She emphasized, “It defeats the purpose of Physical Therapy being an essential service if patients still have to go through so many hoops to get to us.”

She finalized by saying, “We’ll stay open as long as it is feasible and safe to do so. It is going to be a long summer.”
