When people think of what astronauts do, it’s not uncommon to hear answers describing different scientific research tasks. However, there’s much more than just research that goes into the average day of an astronaut! Did you know that astronauts have to be mindful to exercise while they’re in space? In a zero gravity environment, muscles don’t use nearly as much energy as they normally would on Earth. This means that astronauts in orbit have to regularly make use of special exercise equipment, such as a stationary bike, treadmill, and even a weight lifting machine specifically designed to work in outer space!

Tidbits like this are just one of many that astronauts have to share with us. We invite you to join in on the upcoming NASA Downlink event, presented by the Children’s Museum of Brownsville, Brownsville Independent School District, and South Texas Astronomical Society. NASA Astronauts Shane Kimbrough and Thomas Pesquet, both currently on the International Space Station, will answer a variety of questions asked by students from local valley schools.

The Downlink will goes live on Tuesday, May 11, 2021 at 9 AM and can be viewed free via NASA TV.

We hope you’ll join us as part of this monumental event that will see curious young minds bridge the gap between here and the stars!
