Residents across the Rio Grande Valley, also known as South Texas, can expect generally warm and mostly dry weather from Wednesday, Dec. 17, through Christmas Day, according to regional forecast trends covering areas from Brownsville to Starr County.

Forecasters indicate that conditions during this period will remain above normal for mid-December, with daytime highs mainly in the 70s to 80s and overnight lows mostly in the 50s and 60s. Overall, the pattern points to “above-normal warmth and generally dry conditions” through the holiday period.

On Wednesday, Dec. 17, the forecast calls for warm temperatures with a chance of rain early in parts of the Valley. Clouds and isolated showers may develop before skies begin to clear later in the day. High temperatures are expected to reach the upper 70s to around 80 degrees, with overnight lows in the 60s.

Thursday, Dec. 18, is expected to bring patchy morning fog, which could reduce visibility in some areas. Conditions are forecast to improve later in the day with increased sunshine and warmer temperatures. Highs may reach the upper 80s, while overnight lows are expected to drop into the upper 50s.

By Friday, Dec. 19, weather conditions are forecast to become less humid, with a mix of sunshine and clouds. High temperatures are expected in the mid-70s, with overnight lows near the low 60s.

The weekend of Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 20 and 21, is expected to remain mostly sunny and warm to very warm. High temperatures could climb into the mid to upper 80s on Saturday and possibly approach 90 degrees on Sunday. Overnight lows are forecast to remain in the 60s.

Warm conditions are expected to continue into the start of the following week. On Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 22 and 23, forecasts call for sunshine mixed with intermittent clouds. High temperatures are expected to stay in the mid to upper 80s, with overnight lows in the upper 60s to around 70 degrees. A slight chance of brief, isolated showers is possible, mainly later on Tuesday.

For Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 24 and 25, skies are forecast to be sunny to partly cloudy, providing favorable weather for holiday activities. High temperatures are expected to range from the upper 70s to the low 80s, with overnight lows falling between the 50s and mid-60s.

Forecasters note that December weather in the Rio Grande Valley often tends to be milder than in other parts of Texas, with fewer cold fronts and limited rainfall. For this year, the outlook suggests a continuation of that pattern, with “warm, mostly sunny conditions” and only isolated chances for rain leading into Christmas. Credit: National Weather Service
