MISSION, TEXAS – Today, Chairman of the Texas Veterans Land Board (VLB) and Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush and the City of Mission join together to announce the City will serve as the primary entity responsible for maintenance and day to day operations of the Rio Grande Valley Texas State Veterans Cemetery. This decision greatly enhances the partnership between local and state government and increases our continued dedication toward caring for Texas Veterans and their families.

“The men and women of the United States Military are of unmatched caliber,” said Commissioner George P. Bush. “The Rio Grande Valley Texas State Veterans Cemetery is the final resting place for our defenders of liberty and freedom. I am proud to announce that the City of Mission will be joining the State of Texas in ensuring our Veterans’ burial ground is treated with the highest level of care and respect-fitting of our men and women’s service to this great state and country.”

Contracting with the City of Mission allows city and state government to partner together to ensure Texas Veterans receive the utmost respect as they assume operations and maintenance of the cemetery. The City staff will manage the day to day operations at the cemetery in accordance with VLB guidelines.

“This partnership is just another example of our devotion and commitment towards caring for Rio Grande Valley Veterans and their families,” Mission Mayor Dr. Armando O’Caña said. “I am proud and honored that the City of Mission will be joining the State of Texas in ensuring our Veterans’ Cemetery is treated with the utmost care and reverence for our men and women who have served to protect our freedom.”

The City will be responsible for maintaining the buildings, grounds, and equipment of the Veterans Cemetery, including performing all routine and preventative maintenance.  The City will also ensure that the grounds and landscape are kept in excellent condition. All eligibility rules remain the same for burials.
