Veterans Memorial High School students earn highest music honor in state

Mission, Texas- Five students from Veterans Memorial High School (VMHS) have earned a chair in the Texas Music Educators Association 6A/5A All-State Band. This is considered the highest level of achievement for any music student in the state of Texas. 

Earning this honor are: Laura Barba, second chair 6A, flute; Nicolas Ochoa, fourth chair 6A, horn; Daniel Martinez, first chair 5A, Bb clarinet; Brandon Piña, second chair 5A, trumpet; Sara Martinez-Salinas, fourth chair 5A, trumpet.  

6A/5A is unique in that any 5A or 6A band student is eligible to audition for a spot in the 6A band, making it the toughest individual contest offered. Students in the TMEA All-State Bands represent the top 2% of band students in the state. Two 6A All-State students and three 5A All-State students represents a campus and district record.

VMHS had three other students who placed well in the competitions for All-State honors. They are: Grecia Mayorga, third chair 5A flute; Gabriel Sanchez, 10th chair 5A, trumpet; Daniel Castillo-Maldonado, third chair 5A, bass trombone.
