WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Reps. Filemon Vela (TX-34) and Ron Wright (TX-06) introduced the bipartisan State and National Guard Fairness Act of 2020. Before 2018, members of the National Guard and State Defense Forces were able to claim unreimbursed work expenses as tax deductions. This legislation would restore these deductions, allowing National Guard and State Defense Force members to submit drill travel costs and uniform purchases.

“The brave men and women of our National Guard and State Defense Forces, and their families, make great sacrifices to serve our nation and protect American citizens at home and abroad. I consider it one of my highest responsibilities as a member of Congress to ensure that they are offered the necessary resources to continue their excellent record of service,” said Congressman Vela. “Members of the National Guard and State Defense Forces should not be burdened with additional expenses for their time of service to this great nation.”

“Our servicemen and women of the National Guard and State Defense Forces risk their lives to ensure that we are safe here at home. Due to the recent change in our tax code, these men and women are now required to pay for the expenses they incur during their service, which can reach thousands of dollars, out of their own pocket,” said Congressman Wright. “This commonsense legislation would simply reinstate the tax deductions we had in place before 2018 and allow our brave men and women to serve our country and states without financial burden.”
