Brownsville, TX – Today, Congressman Filemon Vela (D-TX) announced that the Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) National Board has awarded nearly $3.2 million to six counties throughout the 34th District of Texas. These funds were appropriated in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act, and will be used to support local and nonprofit organizations that provide food, shelter, and resources to families in need of assistance.

The counties awarded funding include:

  • Bee County                   $13,288
  • Cameron County           $278,124
  • Hidalgo County             $678,701
  • Jim Wells County          $24,937
  • Kleberg County             $17,817
  • Willacy County             $16,178

“Americans are still adjusting to the very difficult and trying times this pandemic has brought on our daily lives,” said Congressman Vela.  “Individuals and families should not have to worry about affording basic necessities such as food and shelter. I am pleased that funding through the CARES Act will help provide counties and organizations in South Texas with resources to support some of the most vulnerable in our communities.”
