McALLEN, Texas – In a powerful expression of unity and compassion, local faith leaders and civic officials from across the Rio Grande Valley came together Monday evening to host an interfaith candlelight prayer vigil at the McAllen Performing Arts Center. The vigil honored the bravery of McAllen Police Officer Ismael Garcia, who was recently injured in the line of duty, and remembered the lives lost in the recent Guadalupe River tragedy near Kerrville.

The evening began with a welcome address from Mayor Javier Villalobos, followed by a presentation of the colors by the McAllen Police Department Honor Guard. Faith leaders from multiple denominations led the community in prayer and reflection, including Rabbi Nathan Farb, Father Rod Clark of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Reverend Greg Labus of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, and Pastor Christopher Dupree of Baptist Temple.
Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz addressed the crowd, recognizing Officer Garcia’s courage and sacrifice. Officer Garcia was present at the vigil and was warmly acknowledged by the audience for his bravery and dedication to public service.

“In times of tragedy we rely on our local communities of faith and our civic leadership to offer support, prayer and guidance,” said Rabbi Nathan Farb. “Our first responders daily place themselves in the line of danger in order to protect all of us and our children. May our prayers lift up and support all of those who support us day in and day out.”
The vigil included a moment of silence for the victims of the Kerrville flooding and special prayers over first responders, underscoring the shared strength and resilience of the Rio Grande Valley.
“I am deeply grateful for the community we call home—a community that consistently comes together in times of need and rises in strength through unity,” said Pastor Christopher Dupree. “The prayer service held at the McAllen Performing Arts Center is a powerful reflection of that spirit. To see civic leaders, faith leaders, and citizens stand shoulder to shoulder to honor our law enforcement and first responders while collectively seeking God’s continued protection speaks volumes about the heart and character of the Rio Grande Valley.”
Monday’s gathering demonstrated the extraordinary spirit of the Valley—where unity across all faiths, backgrounds, and positions of leadership serves as a guiding light in difficult times.
