SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, TX, The Valley Environmental Coalition will be hosting the 12th Annual Valley Environmental Summit on Friday, October 1, 2021 from 8:30am – 3:30pm. This year’s summit, Sailing Towards a Cleaner Environment, will be held at the South Padre Island Convention Center, located at 7355 Padre Blvd.
The Valley Environmental Summit is held to bring the general public, political leaders, neighborhood associations, non-profits, businesses, and students together to identify environmental issues within the Rio Grande Valley, and develop solutions to those issues. Sponsorship for this year’s Summit was made available through HEB.
Invited session speakers include Jace Tunnel, Director at the Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve to discuss “nurdles” and their negative and dangerous impact on marine life; Ivan Santoyo, City of Laredo Environmental Services will speak on their Household Hazardous Waste Collection Station; and Dr. Hudson Deyoe, UTRGV Chair for the Department of Biology will speak regarding the “Texas Coastal Report Card” and the health of our bay area.
This year’s event will also include a video of an Upcycled Fashion Show presenting beautifully designed clothing made out of recyclables and other discarded materials created by students from Idea Public School – Brownsville Riverview.
Additionally, a Call for Entries for the Summit’s video and art contest is being made to Rio Grande Valley students. The video film contest is open to all high school students and the art contest to students in grades pre-K through 8th grade. Rio Grande Valley students are encouraged to submit entries with this year’s Summit theme. Cash prizes will be awarded for the video and art contest winners. Contest entry forms and rules can be obtained through www.valleyes.us. Deadline to enter is September 17, 2021.
This year’s summit will culminate with a beach clean-up that will be held at Clayton’s on South Padre Island on Saturday, October 2, 2021 starting at 8:30 a.m. Online registration for the beach clean-up is required and can be completed atwww.valleyes.us.
The Valley Environmental Coalition is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to create a venue where attendees can come together and highlight the most important environmental issues. The event is free; however, seating is limited to the first 175 participants. Registration is required and will remain open until September 17, 2021.
