JUNE 9, 2020 — The University of Texas System has moved up two spots and is now third on the Top 100 Worldwide Universities Granted U.S. Utility Patents for 2019—for which UTSA plays a key role in the designation.

UT System was the highest ranked Texas institution on the list. Rounding out the top 5 rankings were the University of California System, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, and Stanford University.

“UTSA is a key player in the innovation ecosystem, not only in the region but also within the overall UT System,” explained Bernard Arulanandam, vice president for research, economic development, and knowledge enterprise. “Our dynamic research community helped move the rankings with their contributions in life and physical sciences, computing and wireless inventions.”

Published by the National Academy of Inventors and Intellectual Property Owners Association, the report pulls data from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and calculates the number of utility patents that lists a university as the first assignee on the printed patent.

In FY 2019 the UT System had 276 patents granted by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Of those, UTSA contributed 21—7.6% of the total and two-fold above the UT System average when normalized to research activity.

UTSA’s 21 issued patents are:
