RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s soccer team picked up its first home win of the season after defeating the Chicago State Cougars 2-0 on Thursday at UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
UTRGV (4-1-2, 1-1-1 WAC) took control of the match early on as freshman Madeline Von Moeller scored the matches first goal in the seventh minute. Von Moeller took the pass from junior Emily Zapata and floated it over Stella Chiara for her first-career goal.
In the 18th minute, senior Gina Steiner took the cross from freshman Nadia Colon and headed into the goal for her third goal of the season giving UTRGV the 2-0 lead.
Redshirt junior Maile Lunardi (4-1-2) and freshman Macie Blohowiak combined for the shutout. Lunardi made three saves on the night.
UTRGV outshot Chicago State (0-5-0, 0-3-0 WAC) 18 to 4 and 11 to 3 on goal.
UTRGV will be back in action on Thursday, March 4, when it hosts Utah Valley University at 6 p.m. at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
A limited number of seats are available as UTRGV Athletics is capping capacity at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex at 150 fans. Tickets are not required as admission is complimentary and granted on a first-come, first-served basis. UTRGV students are asked to sit in the designated student section.
The UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex has capacity for 1,250 spectators. Limiting capacity to 150 allows for proper social distancing among fans, staff and student-athletes.
