RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s basketball team won its third-straight game, beating the Texas A&M International Dustdevils 72-56 on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Graduate student Desirea Buerge led the Vaqueros (5-3) with a career-high 17 points, four rebounds, and a career-high five steals. Junior Trelynn Tyler scored 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting with four assists and two steals. Junior Zhane Templeton finished with 13 points.
Patrycja Jaworska led the Dustdevils with 20 points. Nicole Heyn scored 11 points.
The Vaqueros trailed 24-10 early in the second quarter. That’s when the Vaqueros lit on fire, hitting 10 of their next 14 shots to go on a 24-5 run and take a 34-29 lead. Buerge scored 10 points during the run while Templeton added seven. Templeton gave the Vaqueros the lead twice during the run, first at 27-26 with a layup and then at 32-29 with a three.
Up 36-33 at the half, Tyler got the Vaqueros off to a good start in the third quarter with back-to-back layups to spark a 12-2 run that made the score 50-35.
The Dustdevils responded with a 12-5 run to pull within 55-47 at the start of the fourth, but a three by freshman Halie Jones and layups by senior Megan Johnson and Buerge allowed the Vaqueros to go on a 7-2 run to take a 62-49 lead and push the game out of reach.
UTRGV closes out the home stand on Thursday at 7 p.m. against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union. The first 200 fans in attendance will receive #BeatCorpus t-shirts.
