RIO GRANDE VALLEY – In a rematch of last year’s Western Athletic Tournament Championship Game, The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s basketball team exacted revenge from the New Mexico State University Aggies with a 74-63 victory on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
This is the Vaqueros’ (11-15, 6-7 WAC) first victory over the Aggies (9-17, 6-7 WAC) since March 5, 2016, snapping a nine-game skid. Three of those games, including the last two, went to overtime. Each of the last three meetings was decided by three points or less.
Junior Trelynn Tyler led the Vaqueros with 19 points while hitting a career-high-tying five three-pointers to go with four rebounds, two assists, and three steals. Graduate student Desirea Buerge scored 15 points with five rebounds and two steals. Junior Amara Graham scored 14 points with four assists and two blocks. Freshman Halie Jones scored nine points with six rebounds.
Soufia Inoussa led the Aggies with 16 points, four assists, and four steals.
The game was tight for the first eight minutes, but with the Vaqueros’ lead 13-12, Tyler bookended a 13-2 run with three-pointers to make the score 26-14.
The Aggies pulled within 26-20 midway through the second, but the Vaqueros scored six of the next seven points, capped by a Buerge three-point play, to go up 32-21.
The Vaqueros’ lead was 46-37 midway through the third quarter when a Jones three sparked a 13-4 run to put the Vaqueros up 59-41 and push the game out of reach.
