SEATTLE – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s basketball team fell to the Seattle U Redhawks 78-70 on Saturday at the Redhawk Center.
Junior Trelynn Tyler led the Vaqueros (10-15, 5-7 WAC) with 14 points and five rebounds. Graduate student Desirea Buerge finished with 13 points and eight rebounds. Senior Megan Johnson scored 12 points with seven rebounds. Freshman Sara Bershers scored 10 points.
Joana Alves led the Redhawks (12-12, 6-5 WAC) with 19 points and six rebounds. Kamira Sanders scored 16 points with six rebounds. Courtney Murphy scored 15 points. Olivia Crawford scored 14 points with six rebounds.
Buerge and Bershers hit a pair of early threes as the Vaqueros jumped out to an 8-4 lead. The Vaqueros extended their lead to 12-7 on a layup by freshman Halie Jones and 19-13 on a layup by sophomore Asheli Lopez.
The Redhawks responded with a 9-0 run to take the lead. Bershers tied the game at 22 with a three and then Tyler tied the game at 25 with a three of her own.
The Vaqueros trailed by one at halftime and were within 34-33 in the opening minutes of the third thanks to a Johnson layup. The Redhawks followed with a 10-2 run to go up 44-35.
The Vaqueros were still within nine at 55-46 late in the third when the Redhawks went on a 14-4 run to go up 69-50.
Then, down 71-52, a Jones three sparked a 16-4 run to bring the Vaqueros within 75-68. The Vaqueros were still within seven at 77-70, but that’s as close as they got.
UTRGV is back in action on Saturday at 12 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse against New Mexico State in a rematch of last season’s WAC Tournament Championship Game.
