FORT WORTH – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros volleyball team fell to the host TCU Horned Frogs 0-3 (17-25, 17-25, 17-25) at the Cowtown Classic on Thursday at Schollmaier Arena.
Junior Sarah Cruz led the Vaqueros (2-2) with eight kills, five digs and two aces. Junior Yasmim da Silva recorded seven kills with four digs. Freshman Luanna Emiliano posted 22 assists and nine digs. Freshman Edinburg North alum Evana Ramos finished with 10 digs and one ace.
Mykayla Myers led the Horned Frogs (2-2) with 11 kills on .846 hitting and nine blocks. Julia Adams also had 11 kills. Taylor Raiola recorded a match-high 12 kills.
Cruz had a pair of early kills to help the Vaqueros jump out to a 5-3 lead in the first set. The Horned Frogs won the next four serves to take the lead. The Horned Frogs pushed their lead to 15-10 before a kill a pair of kills by sophomore Loanna Charitonidi fueled a 5-0 run to tie the set. The Horned Frogs, however, responded with a 10-2 run to end the set.
The second set was tied at 3 on a Cruz kill. That’s when the Horned Frogs went on a 7-1 run to go up 10-4. The Vaqueros trailed 8-13 when they went on a 5-1 run, capped by a kill by sophomore Luisa Silva Dos Santos, to pull within 13-14. The Horned Frogs, however, won the next five serves as part of a 9-2 run to push the set out of reach.
The Horned Frogs jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the third set. Four serves later, da Silva came up with three-straight kills as part of a 4-0 run to bring the Vaqueros to within 7-8. The Horned Frogs responded with a 9-2 run to extend their lead to 17-9 and push the set out of reach.
UTRGV closes out the Cowtown Classic on Friday at 3 p.m. against Nicholls.
