INDIANAPOLIS – The NCAA announced on Tuesday that The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley volleyball and men’s golf programs have been honored with NCAA Public Recognition Awards, an honor which is bestowed on teams with an NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR) in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports based on their most recent multi-year APRs.

This is the third time the volleyball team has been honored with an NCAA Public Recognition Award after having previously earned the honor in 2015 and 2017. This is the men’s golf team’s first honor.

The volleyball team is one of two in the UT System, three in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), eight in Texas and 91 in the nation to be recognized.

The men’s golf team is one of two in the UT System, two in the WAC, six in Texas and 107 in the nation to be recognized.

A total of 1,380 Division I programs from 326 institutions received the NCAA Public Recognition Award for the 2018-19 academic year. The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 academic years.

The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the ongoing academic performance for each team in every sport. All teams must meet an academic threshold of 930 to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
