RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS – SEPT 17, 2015 – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley has named Dr. Paul Sale, chair of the Department of Educational Psychology, its Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR).
In this role, Sale has been designated by UTRGV President Guy Bailey to serve as a liaison between the university and the athletics department, and also as a representative of the university in Western Athletic Conference and NCAA affairs.
“I am pleased that Dr. Sale will be assisting us in this important role,” Bailey said. “His vast experience as a provost, dean and professor will be invaluable as he helps ensure academic integrity and compliance of our athletics programs, and enhance the experiences of our student-athletes.”
Sale joined The University of Texas Pan-American in 2006 as provost and vice president for Academic Affairs. He stepped down in 2010 to return to the classroom as a professor in the Department of Educational Psychology. He became chair of the department in 2012.
During his tenure as provost, Sale is credited with initiating the formation of a faculty orientation program that helped educators acclimate to South Texas and the university to retain more professors; supporting improvements in academic advisement, which led to more students continuing their education at the university; and improving relationships between administration and the Faculty Senate and College Councils.
“Our athletes project a positive image of the university as they compete around the country,” Sale said. “Their hard work greatly benefits this new university as we seek to be recognized nationally. I am particularly pleased with the efforts of the coaches and administration to ensure these athletes achieve academically. The focus on academics is punctuated by the athletes’ aggregate GPA of 3.07 during the 2014-15 academic year. It is an honor to be able to lend my support to their work.”
Before joining UTPA, Sale served as dean and professor in the College of Education and Human Development at Radford (Va.) University from 2000-2006. He spent eight years at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, serving in a variety of roles including interim dean (1999-2000) and associate dean (1997-99) in the School of Education.
Sale received both his bachelor’s in special education-mental retardation and his master’s in special education-emotional disturbance from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1979 and 1982, respectively. He received his doctorate in education of exceptional children in 1986 from the University of Georgia.
