HELOTES – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men’s tennis team picked up its second win of the day as it swept Howard Payne University Yellow Jackets 7-0 on Friday at Northside Tennis Center.
UTRGV (2-0) got off to another good start as it swept through doubles competition. Redshirt freshman Luka Jankovic and redshirt junior Zane Kohrs set the tone for the Vaqueros on court one as the duo defeated Micah Hunter and Hunter Green 6-0.
Redshirt junior Carlo Izurieta and redshirt senior Mateo Schmit teamed up to beat Alexander Shelton and Dakota Anderson 6-2 on court two while redshirt sophomore Te Kani Williams andredshirt junior Alberto Mello beat Dominic Denado and Landon Ferree 6-4 on court three.
In singles, the Vaqueros made quick work of the Yellow Jackets dropping just two games throughout. Izurieta defeated Hunter 6-0, 6-0 on court one while Jankovic picked up the 6-0, 6-0 win over Denado on court two.
Kohrs beat Ashton Stevens 6-0, 6-0 on court three. Williams picked up the 6-0, 6-1 victory over Green while Schmit defeated Fereer 6-1, 6-0 on court five. Mello wrapped up the singles lineup with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Romeo Rubio.
UTRGV will be back in action on Sunday at 10 a.m. when it hosts Louisiana at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
Seating for fans at UTRGV home matches is limited to 25 fans. Limiting the capacity allows for proper social distancing among fans, staff, and student-athletes.
Face masks are required to be worn properly by all fans, media and staff present inside the Orville Cox Tennis Center. The CDC defines wearing a mask correctly as covering the nose and mouth and securing it around the chin, trying to fit in snugly against the side of the face. The CDC does not recommend using masks with an exhalation valve or vent. Neck gaiters, bandanas and similar items are not acceptable alternatives to face masks. Children ages 2 and under are not required to wear masks.
Restrooms at the Orville Cox Tennis Center will be closed to the public to limit access into the Tier 1 section.
