RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men’s golf team learned this week that alum Pedro Lamadrid has qualified for the PGA Tour Latinoamerica (PTLA) after finishing 18th at the PTLA Qualifying Tournament in Argentina.

Lamadrid earned conditionally exempt status for the first half of the 2020 season, which starts March 5 at the Estrella del Mar Open in Mazatlan, Mexico. Lamadrid becomes the first UTRGV golfer under head coach Philip Tate to earn a pro card.

“I am so proud of Pedro and all of the hard work he has put in,” UTRGV head coach Philip Tate said. “I am excited to see what is in store for him as he continues to pursue his dreams out on the golf course.”

The PGA Tour Latino America is a branch of the PGA Tour as it helps feed membership to the tour. Lamadrid’s exemption puts him on a path to qualify for the Korn Ferry Tour, which is another avenue to reach the PGA Tour.

“It’s great to see all the hard work starting to pay off,” Lamadrid said.

The top five players on the 2020 PGA Tour Latinoamerica Points List will receive Korn Ferry Tour membership for 2021, with the leading points earner becoming exempt for the 2021 Korn Ferry Tour Season.

Players finishing 6th-10th on the 2020 points list will be exempt into the Final Stage of the 2021 Korn Ferry Tour Qualifying Tournament.
