RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men’s basketball team beat the Texas A&M International Dustdevils 89-51 on Monday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
At 5-2, the Vaqueros are now off to their best start since 2006-07. The Vaqueros have now won nine-straight home games dating back to Feb. 1, marking the team’s longest home winning streak since Nov. 10, 2006 – Feb. 3, 2007 (10 games).
Junior Sean Rhea led the Vaqueros with 19 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Quinton Johnson II scored 16 points while hitting a season-high tying four three-pointers and grabbing a career-high tying nine rebounds. Sophomore Connor Raines finished with a season-high 14 points and two steals.
Tre Thomas led the Dustdevils with 11 points and nine rebounds. Journee Phillips also scored 11 points.
Rhea set the tone early, coming up with the first basket of the game – an emphatic dunk, while scoring the Vaqueros’ first five points to help the Vaqueros jump out to an 8-1 lead.
The Vaqueros used a 7-0 run to go up 15-4 before six-straight Dustdevils points made the score 15-10. Then, with the score 18-10, the Vaqueros scored nine-straight points as part of a 15-4 run to go up 33-17.
The Dustdevils got as close as 15 early in the second half, but a Johnson three sparked a 15-4 run to push the game out of reach.
UTRGV is back in action on Monday at 6 p.m. against Sam Houston State at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. UTRGV Athletics is capping capacity at the UTRGV Fieldhouse at 255 fans made up of current UTRGV students, season ticket holders, corporate partners, and families of student-athletes and coaches.
