CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men’s basketball team fell to the Stony Brook Seawolves 69-58 on Saturday as part of the Islander Invitational at the American Bank Center.
Graduate student Jordan Jackson led the Vaqueros (1-3) with 15 points, four assists, and four steals. Sophomore Uche Dibiamaka scored a career-high 11 points with four rebounds. Junior Chris Freeman finished with 10 points. Senior Lesley Varner II scored nine points with five rebounds.
Alijah Olaniyi led the Seawolves (3-2) with 20 points and six rebounds. Andrew Garcia scored 16 points with five rebounds and four steals. Makale Foreman finished with 14 points.
The Seawolves jumped out to a 17-7 lead over the opening nine minutes. Then, with the score 19-9, a jumper by freshman Quinton Johnson IIsparked an 8-2 run to bring the Vaqueros within 21-17.
The Vaqueros were still within four at 25-21 before an 8-2 run by the Seawolves made the score 33-23 with 3:32 remaining in the first half.
The Vaqueros went on a 13-6 run from the end of the first half through the start of the second half, capped by a Varner layup, to climb to within 39-37. The Seawolves answered with three three-pointers in a row to go up 48-37.
The Vaqueros responded with another run, scoring eight of the next 10 points to make the score 50-45 on a Freeman layup at the 9:28 mark, but that’s as close as they got.
UTRGV closes out the tournament on Sunday at 4 p.m. against host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as part of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Navy Army Community Credit Union.
