UTRGV Men’s Basketball falls at Seattle U

SEATTLE, Wash. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men’s basketball team fell to the Seattle U Redhawks 91-74 on Thursday at the Redhawk Center.

Senior Lesley Varner II led the Vaqueros (6-11, 2-2 WAC) with 19 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Sean Rhea scored 13 points with eight rebounds. Freshman Quinton Johnson II scored 11 points and four rebounds. Graduate student Jordan Jackson finished with 11 points and two blocks. Junior Javon Levi scored eight points with eight assists.

Morgan Means led the Redhawks (10-9, 3-1 WAC) with 22 points. Myles Carter scored 17 points with 11 rebounds. Riley Grigsby scored 15 points with five rebounds. Delante Jones finished with 12 points. Mattia Da Campo scored 11 points with seven rebounds. Terrell Brown scored eight points with six rebounds, nine assists, three blocks, and two steals.

Varner hit two three-pointers and a jumper to help the Vaqueros jump out to a 17-5 lead. Two minutes later, Jackson hit a pair of free throws and junior Rob McClain Jr. sunk a jumper to make the score 21-10.

The Redhawks responded with a 15-2 run, bookended by Carter layups, to take a 25-23 lead. A Varner jumper tied the game, and then after a Carter free throw, Varner hit two free throws of his own to put the Vaqueros up 27-26. The Redhawks followed with a 12-3 run before a three by junior Chris Freeman brought the Vaqueros within 38-33 at halftime.

The Vaqueros got as close as three twice early in the second half when a Rhea layup made the score 40-37 and a Rhea dunk made the score 42-39, but the Redhawks scored the next seven points and led by at least eight the rest of the way.
