RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Men’s Basketball Head Coach Matt Figger announced on Wednesday his first signing, adding 6-8, 210-pound forward Shavaul Butters for the 2021-22 season.
Butters comes to UTRGV after playing for Elevation Prep in Fort Wayne, Ind. in 2020-21.
Butters competed at Aspire Academy in Louisville, Kentucky in 2019-20, leading the team in total points (386), field goal percentage (57.1%), three-point percentage (39.6%), and total rebounds (323). He nearly averaged a double-double, finishing at 11.7 points and 9.8 rebounds in 33 games. Butters also recorded 32 blocks and 28 steals. His best game was on Dec. 7, 2019, when Butters scored 30 points on 14-of-23 shooting with 21 rebounds and two blocks against Tennessee Prep Academy.
Originally from Freeport, Bahamas, Butters played his first two seasons at St. George’s High School. He was also part of Bahamas Jaguars 17 60 RRFC Rebels Elite 51, which led to him visiting Texas to compete in the Great American Shootout in Duncanville in July 2019. He scored 12 points in a win over RRFC Rebels Elite, a team based in McKinney.
“Shavaul is an athletic 4 that can run the floor,” Figger said. “He has the ability to make three’s and is a tremendous offensive rebounder. He can really protect the rim and will make an impact by being able to guard multiple guys on the floor.”
