UTRGV Men’s Basketball Adds Mike Adewunmi For 2021-22

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Men’s Basketball Head Coach Matt Figger announced on Tuesday the addition of 6-5, 205-pound guard Mike Adewunmi [AH-doo-WOOM-mee], a graduate transfer from SIU Edwardsville, for the 2021-22 season.

Adewunmi played two seasons at SIUE after starting his career at Houston and playing his sophomore season at McLennan Community College.

Last season at SIUE, Adewunmi averaged 13.0 points on 47.8% shooting, including 35.4% from behind the arc, plus 73.7% from the line, and 6.1 rebounds in 26 games (25 starts).

As a junior in 2019-20, Adewunmi averaged 8.2 points on 48.4% shooting, including 36.4% from behind the arc, plus 77.0% from the line, and 5.1 rebounds in 31 games (nine starts).

As a sophomore at McLennan in 2018-19, Adewunmi averaged 11.7 points on 45.7% shooting and 4.6 rebounds in 31 games (29 starts). He twice earned North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference Player of the Week honors.

As a freshman at Houston in 2017-18, Adewunmi played 36 minutes across 14 games, scoring two points with six rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Originally from Dallas, Adewunmi was ranked as a 3-star recruit by Rivals out of Lake Ridge High School. As a senior in 2016-17, Adewunmi earned All-District 10-5A First Team honors. He was an All-District 14-5A pick as a junior in 2015-16.

“Mike is a super athletic, strong, powerful and highly competitive guard,” Figger said. “I had the pleasure of coaching against him for two years in the Ohio Valley Conference. He can score form a multitude of positions and he rebounds very well for a guard.”

Adewunmi joins 6-8, 210-pound forward Shavaul Butters, 6-9, 215-pound forward Donte Houston Jr., 6-9, 195-pound forwardRayQuan Taylor, 6-6, 185-pound guard/forward Justin Johnson, 6-0, 175-pound guard Ismail Habib, and 6-8, 230-pound forward Sevon “Sai” Witt and 6-3, 195-pound guard BJ Simmons as part of the 2021-22 recruiting class.
