RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Friday that Chris Lowe, who spent the last two seasons as a graduate student manager with the Saint Louis men’s basketball team, is now a special assistant to the head coach with the UTRGV men’s basketball program.
Lowe’s responsibilities include creating video edits of player personnel and plays of opposing teams, creating recruiting materials, setting up official and unofficial visits, assisting with social media, and facilitating community engagement.
“Chris is a strong addition to our staff. He’s someone that’s going to be a great coach in the future,” UTRGV Men’s Basketball Head Coach Lew Hill said. “He played overseas for eight years and played at a high level at UMass. Chris is going to bring a new energy to our staff. That, combined with his youthfulness, is going to be really good for our players.”
During Lowe’s two seasons with Saint Louis, the Billikens went a combined 46-21 (22-14 Atlantic 10), winning the A-10 Tournament Championship and advancing to the NCAA Tournament in 2019.
Lowe starred at UMass from 2005-09, graduating as the school-record holder in career assists with 678, which still ranks sixth all time in A-10 history.
A dynamic and exciting point guard at UMass, Lowe was featured on ESPN SportsCenter’s Top Plays four different times during his career. He finished his career with more than 1,000 points and 600 assists, the first Minuteman to accomplish the feat. Lowe was also the sixth player in school history to register a triple-double when he went for 14 points, 14 assists and 10 rebounds against La Salle as a junior.
Following graduation, Lowe played professionally for eight seasons, starting in the NBA G-League in 2009-10 and then going on to play in Lithuania, Slovakia and Austria.
In July 2015, he created the Clowe14 Skills and Drills Foundation in his hometown of Mount Vernon, New York. He uses his foundation to provide athletic, academic and scholarship opportunities to children in Mount Vernon and surrounding communities.
“I am excited and grateful for the opportunity to join Coach Hill’s staff,” Lowe said. “I look forward to helping the University and our student-athletes reach their full potential.”
Lowe graduated from UMass in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and from Saint Louis in May with a Master of Arts in Leadership and Organizational Development.
