Commissioners Court helped “Rally the Valley” welcoming UTRGV’s new Vice President and Athletic Director Chasse Conque.
Conque joined UTRGV on Aug. 2 after previously serving as Vice-Chancellor and Director of Athletics at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock where he added a wrestling program and set a record for fundraising.  He also helped guide the men’s and women’s basketball programs, which both reached the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the second round.
“He comes to us with a record where students have excelled through athletics as well as academically,” said UTRGV Vice President for Governmental and Community Relations Dr. Veronica Gonzales who introduced Conque.
Gonzales said that Conque had coined the phrase “Rally the Valley” and has unified the university throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
In a presentation shown in court, Conque highlighted stats and academic success from 158 UTRGV student-athletes with GPAs of 3.0 or higher. Â
“I am very proud of our programs and coaches,” said Conque. “I can’t tell you how excited I am to be a part of a growing campus of 30,000 students. We are a very diverse cohort where academics are thoroughly important.”
As Conque thanked the court, he introduced a very special guest, the university’s mascot the Vaquero, who brings pride and tradition to the campus and the community at large.
