EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) baseball team scored seven runs in the sixth inning to come from behind and beat North Dakota State University (NDSU) 8-3 in the Al Ogletree Classic on Saturday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
Down 3-1 in the sixth, UTRGV (3-3) drew three walks and had a hit batsman to score a run and knock out reliever Parker Harm (0-1). The final walk, with the bases loaded, went to junior Hunter Lessard for his first-career RBI.
Junior Andy Atwood greeted new reliever Jake Drew with a sacrifice fly. Then, with two outs, junior Conrado Diaz hit an RBI-single. Junior Coleman Grubbs followed with an infield-single, setting up a two-run single by junior Christian Sepulveda. Junior Elijah Alexander followed with an RBI-single of his own. Sepulveda advanced to third on the hit, and the proceeded to steal home during the next at-bat to cap the inning with UTRGV up 8-3.
Diaz finished 2-for-5 while Alexander went 1-for-2 with two walks.
That made a winner of senior Trevelle Hill (2-0), who struck out six in 6.2 innings while allowing three runs on eight hits.
Junior Ricky Arevalo retired the final seven batters to close out the game.
NDSU (1-4) scored all of its runs in the third on a bunt-single by Jake Malec and a two-run single by Jack Simonsen.
UTRGV scored its first run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by junior Jacob Hirsh.
UTRGV continues the Al Ogletree Classic against Portland at 3 p.m.
