STILLWATER, Okla. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros baseball team closed out a three-game series against the No. 24 Oklahoma State University Cowboys with an 8-4 loss on Sunday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
The Vaqueros (2-5) scored their first three runs to break a scoreless tie in the fourth. The inning started with a single by senior Coleman Grubbs and an RBI-double by junior Freddy Rojas Jr. One out later, a walk and a single loaded the bases, setting up a two-run double by junior EJ Taylor.
The Cowboys (5-2) got two runs back immediately when Caeden Trenkle homered off of junior Mission Veterans Memorial alum Christian Ramos (0-2) in the bottom of the inning.
The Cowboys tied the game in the fifth on a Kaden Polcovich double before taking the lead in the sixth on a run-scoring wild pitch and a Brock Mathis sacrifice fly.
The Cowboys added two in the seventh on a Trenkle two-run triple and a Carson McCusker sacrifice fly.
That made a winner of C.J. Varela (1-0), who walked one and struck out one in a hitless sixth.
The Vaqueros scored in the ninth on an RBI-single by junior Jacob Hirsh, but that was it against Brett Standlee, who pitched around four hits and one walk in three innings, striking out four, for his first save.
