RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of $1.5 million of renovations to the UTRGV Fieldhouse on Tuesday.
The ceremony was punctuated by the launch of Vaquero Village, a new pregame fan experience at UTRGV basketball games.
Renovations include new men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, visiting team and officials’ locker rooms and team rooms, new hallways leading to the locker room areas, a new athletic training room, a new media room, a new equipment room, a redesigned Sam Williams Court, new baskets, new scoreboards, new scorer’s and media tables with LED boards, and new entry doors.
Vaquero Village features four sections, one for UTRGV students with picnic tables, one for kids with a custom inflatable and picnic tables, one for professionals with lounge furniture and cocktail tables, and one for corporate partners with lounge furniture and cocktail tables. Vaquero Village also includes a bar run by Sodexo, serving all patrons of legal age with proper identification.
“These renovations help to enhance both the student-athlete and fan experience,” said UTRGV Vice President and Director of Athletics Chasse Conque, who is also celebrating his 100th day in the position. “We are trying to create something special here and want to show our gratitude toward all who supported these endeavors.”
Vaquero Village will be fully set up for all 7 p.m. men’s and women’s basketball home games. Any weekend games starting prior to 7 p.m. will have a setup featuring the professionals and special events/corporate partners zones.
Vaquero Village and doors to the UTRGV Fieldhouse now open 90 minutes prior to game time for all basketball home games.
All ticketed fans can access Vaquero Village. Tickets will now be scanned at the gate next to the box office, allowing access to Vaquero Village and the fieldhouse. Season ticket holders can still enter through the season ticket entrance on the east side of the fieldhouse adjacent to the parking lot. Current UTRGV students, who receive free general admission, can have their UTRGV student IDs scanned at the gate on the west side of the fieldhouse courtyard adjacent to the science building.
Current UTRGV students get free general admission with a valid UTRGV student ID. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased online at UTRGVTickets.com. Fans purchasing their tickets online prior to game day can save up to $2 per ticket.
