EDINBURG – The Western Athletic Conference (WAC) announced on Monday that the University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) baseball team has been picked to finish sixth out of 10 teams this season in the WAC coaches’ poll.
The Broncs earned 37 points in the poll, eight fewer than Grand Canyon, which was picked to finish fifth, but two more than Seattle U, which was picked to finish seventh, and three more than Northern Colorado, which was picked to finish eighth.
Bakersfield was picked to win the WAC, garnering eight first place votes for 80 points. New Mexico State and Sacramento State received the other first place votes, getting picked to finish second with 70 points and third with 68 points, respectively. Utah Valley was picked to finish fourth with 50 points.
North Dakota was picked to finish ninth with 22 points while Chicago State was picked to finish 10th with nine points.
The top six teams from the regular season, not including Grand Canyon, which is not yet postseason eligible, advance to the double-elimination WAC Tournament at Cubs Park in Mesa, Ariz., May 21-25.
The Broncs open the 2014 season on Feb. 14 at 7 p.m. against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. The Broncs open WAC play on March 21 at 7 p.m. against New Mexico State at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
