Texas Border Business –
By Viviana Ozuna,
As a leader for cosmetology education in this exciting field of hairdressing, University of Cosmetology Arts & Sciences (UCAS) plays a large part in training students for employment, thus creating jobs in this $300 billion global industry! According to Texas Department of Licensing & Regulation there are 235,991 licensed Cosmetologists, Manicurists, Estheticians and Instructors in Texas.
Americans cut back plenty on their spending in times of economic crisis, but the one thing that they do not skip is the visits to their hair salons. The New York Times cites a recent Census Bureau report stating that hair care is one of the few small-business industries to grow in the past several years, with the number of stylists and shops increasing by 8 percent making hair salons a recession proof business.
Without a doubt UCAS has been excellent at serving the educational needs of future professionals in South Texas with a total of five campuses: McAllen, Harlingen, La Joya plus two locations in San Antonio under President Lucinda S. Leyva. Mrs. Leyva told TBB, “We have been in business going on 40 years in which education is the foundation of our institution. We prepare students with the various manipulative skills, technical knowledge and proper attitudes to become licensed professionals in the job market.” As a former school teacher, licensed cosmetology instructor, Texas Cosmetology Commissioner and NACCAS Evaluator, Mrs. Leyva is inspired to see her former students succeeding in this rewarding industry and ultimately working in the job force to provide for their families.
Listed are the courses offered day and night to provide all studies designed for a fast pace growing industry: Cosmetology Operator, Manicurist, Esthetician, Instructor.
The primary purpose of UCAS is to better prepare students to become successful members of the cosmetology profession. In order to fulfill this objective, the institution has adopted business techniques from Milady’s Business Fundamentals program, teaching the techniques of artistry of cosmetology, poise, charm, self-reliance, personal hygiene and business practices. When balancing beauty with business graduates are set for gainful employment and the students are prepared for the State Licensing Examination.
UCAS is comprised of diligent and dedicated employees consisting of school directors, licensed Instructors & administrators who currently serve 429 students. All institutions are approved by U.S. Department of Education, to participate in Title IV Student Financial Aid programs, such as Pell Grant and Direct Loans, recognized and licensed by Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) as licensed Private Postsecondary Cosmetology Schools and accredited by the National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts & Sciences (NACCAS).
