HARLINGEN – The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will host a virtual public meeting with an in-person option to discuss and gather input on the proposed reconstruction and widening of SL 499 (Ed Carey Drive) from FM 106 to IH 69E in Cameron County, Texas.
The proposed SL 499 improvements consist of reconstructing and widening the existing roadway to add lane capacity, install a raised median, add bicycle and pedestrian accommodations, and improve the bridge crossing the Arroyo Colorado. The existing SL 499 is a six-lane and four-lane principal arterial roadway providing mobility and access to residences, businesses and schools, and linking the roadway network to other urban areas.
The purpose of the public meeting is to present the proposed project and receive input on the proposed project for further evaluation.
The virtual public meeting will be available starting Monday, Sept. 8, 2025, at www.txdot.gov, by entering the keyword “SL 499.” There will be an in-person option:

The in-person public meeting will be held in an open house format and representatives from TxDOT and project team members will be available to answer questions. Displays and exhibits will be available for viewing both in person and online along with a pre-recorded presentation in English and Spanish. The information presented in the virtual public meeting and at the in-person open house are identical, and the opportunities to comment do not differ.
