The new 17-mile-long roadway, to be constructed in three phases, will serve as a US 83 relief route, from FM 755 in Rio Grande City to the US 83/Loma Blanca Road intersection in Roma, just north of Roma High School. Image courtesy of TxDOT

The construction kick-off event on Dec. 2 is for phase one, a $62 million investment connecting FM 755 to FM 3167 in Rio Grande City. 

In 2026, construction is scheduled to begin on phase two, connecting FM 3167 in Rio Grande City to FM 649 near El Sauz.

The third and final phase, connecting FM 649 to the intersection of US 83 and Loma Blanca Road, is tentatively set to let for construction in 2028.

All three projects will include a 4-lane divided highway (two travel lanes in each direction) with shoulders and a grassy median.
