PHARR – January 19, 2024 – The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is mobilizing crews across the Pharr District to prepare for the potential impacts of subfreezing temperatures and precipitation forecasted for the area. Trucks will begin filling with brine early Monday morning as part of winter weather operations.
Out of an abundance of caution, some TxDOT crews started pre-treating bridges and overpasses on Sunday afternoon. This initial effort targeted key locations along FM 755 and US 281 in Hidalgo and Brooks counties, including San Manuel, Rachel, and Falfurrias communities.
Pre-Treatment Measures with Brine Solution
To prevent ice formation, TxDOT will focus on pre-treating bridges and overpasses along major state highways using a brine solution—a mixture of water and salt. This solution is effective in reducing the risk of icy road conditions and enhancing driver safety during wintry weather.
Convoys of trucks will be deployed throughout the Pharr District, covering the counties of Cameron, Willacy, Hidalgo, Starr, Zapata, Brooks, Jim Hogg, and Kenedy. These operations aim to minimize hazardous driving conditions on heavily traveled routes.
Safety Tips for Drivers
With icy conditions possible, TxDOT advises drivers to take precautions if travel becomes necessary:
- Stay Informed: Monitor local weather forecasts and consider delaying or canceling travel plans during hazardous conditions.
- Buckle Up: Always wear a seatbelt.
- Adjust Driving: Reduce speeds, drive to match road conditions, and increase the following distance between vehicles.
- Use Extra Caution: Pay special attention on bridges and overpasses, which freeze more quickly than other road surfaces.
- Turn Off Cruise Control: Maintain full control of the vehicle in slippery conditions.
- Give TxDOT Space: Maintain at least 200 feet of distance from TxDOT vehicles during brine application operations.
