EDINBURG, Texas – Rio Grande Valley FC will face San Antonio FC on the road for another South Texas Derby clash on Saturday, July 25. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. CST, the matchup will be broadcasted nationally on ESPN+.Â
Here are your three key points:
- During a midweek matchup, the Toros showed great improvements even though the squad had a short turnaround. RGV FC’s backline was solid throughout the match and managed to contain OKC Energy FC’s attacking force. With little time to train, RGV adjusted some errors made on Sunday night in order to come out with a possible victory. Although OKC struck late in the game to equalize, the Toros continued to defend every potential threat. Robert Castellanos currently leads the Championship with 41 clearances and Paul Blanchette has totaled 15 saves, also leading the league. Blanchette has been key to the backline after having huge saves that have prevented numerous goals from being conceded.
- Jamaican native DeShane Beckford showcased his skills since the beginning of the match scoring his first goal for the 2020 season in the 11th minute. As a team, the Toros created 16 chances to goal, leading the USL Championship in total shots taken (65). RGV FC need to continue to create chances and cover the midfield in order to bring home three points.
When both clubs met earlier this week RGV FC struck SAFC with a late equalizer by Taiberson Nunes – earning him a spot for USL Championship Team of the Week. Cristian Parano capitalized on the opportunity of the Toros backline errors and sent a shot to the back of the net early in the game. Both teams continued their South Texas rivalry but managed to earn the first draw of the season against each other. The overall record between RGV FC and SAFC stands at 5-3-5 and the Toros holds a 2-1-3 record at San Antonio. Last time RGV was at Toyota Field, the Toros were down to 10 men on the pitch but ended the night with a lone point after a 2-2 draw.
