EDINBURG – In a continuing effort to promote a healthy workforce, the Hidalgo County Wellness Program encouraged employees to form teams to compete in the 2019 Nationwide Team Challenge. Recent academic research has shown that incentives and games are powerful weight loss tools.
The challenge was held August 2 through October 25 with 15 Hidalgo County teams joining in, said Wellness Coordinator Diana Huallpa, who presented the top three teams at Commissioners Court today.
“A total of 75 county participants took part in the wellness challenge and lost a total of 528 pounds,” said Huallpa.
The program challenged employees to convert to a healthier lifestyle by making better food choices and exercising.
The county ranked 15th nationwide at the end of the challenge, reported Huallpa.
The top Hidalgo County employees were Gustavo Garza, Esteban Mata, Moises Flores, Severo Canales, and Alejandro Placencia.
“I would like to thank Commissioners Court for promoting exercise, better eating habits, and encouraging employees to live a better lifestyle,” said top winner of the Nationwide Team Challenge Garza. “This program has made a big impact on our lives.”
Precinct 2 Commissioner Eduardo “Eddie” Cantu commended all the individuals who participated in the challenge for taking the step towards a healthier lifestyle.
The top three Hidalgo County Teams were: Los Contras (Esteban Mata, Alejandro Placencia, Jose Cantu, Juan Zamora, and Michael Cerda), King’s Corner (Gustavo Garza, Lora Briones, Diana Valdez, Jennifer Garza, and Claudette Guerrero), and Perspire to Inspire (Sandra DeLeon, Isaac Sulemana, Veronica Trevino, Julia Sullivan, and Brandy Salinas).
Congratulations to all the winners and participants!
