The University of Texas-Pan American recently hosted the top 10 migrant senior students from each of the four Edinburg CISD high schools at a luncheon and to meet with Dr. Francisco Guajardo, a professor in the College of Education and director of UTPA’s Bilingual Studies Center. The students are expected to graduate in May from the following high schools: Edinburg North, Johnny Economedes, Robert Vela and Edinburg High. Guajardo talked to the students about his migrant background and the students’ plans to pursue higher education. UTPA President Robert S. Nelsen also spoke to the students about his upbringing in Montana and encouraged them to pursue their dreams. Nine of the 40 students attending will be part of UTPA’s College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) for the 2014-15 academic school year. Seven other students will be at UTPA waitlisted for CAMP services.Ā Ā CAMP is a federally funded discretionary grant funded by the U.S. Department of Education to provide support services to migrant and seasonal farm worker students during their first year of university studies. There are 39 such grants across the nation in institutions of higher education.
