HIDALGO COUNTY – After a summer of smiles, learning, and emotional growth, the “Through the Storm with Sunny – Helping Little Hearts Weather Big Emotions” puppet show will host its final performance on Wednesday, July 23 at 2:00 p.m. at the Palm View Branch Library in McAllen.

The Office of Hidalgo County Judge Richard F. Cortez invites families to join this special closing event, featuring Judge Cortez in attendance. Beloved puppet characters Sunny and Stormy will take the stage one last time to help children understand and manage their feelings during severe weather events.

The interactive program, presented in partnership with the Hidalgo County Mental Health Coalition, Hidalgo County Office of Emergency Management, and Tropical Texas Behavioral Health, has toured libraries across the county throughout the summer, providing children and families with hands-on activities, storytelling, and take-home resources that promote emotional resilience and preparedness.

“This final show is not only a celebration of Sunny and Stormy’s journey but of the many children and families who embraced the message of courage, connection, and calm,” said Judge Cortez. “I’m proud to have been part of a program that puts our youngest residents first and equips them with skills that will serve them long after storm season ends.”

Each participating child will enjoy creating a no-cook snack, receive a free booklet filled with activities and coping tools, and take part in guided conversations led by mental health professionals. Parents will also walk away with resources to help them support their children through emotionally challenging situations.

Since its launch in June, Through the Storm with Sunny has visited libraries in McAllen, Mission, Edinburg, Weslaco, Pharr, and San Juan, among others, reaching hundreds of families across Hidalgo County.
